Authors

Abstract
The paper deals with the idea of colonial modernity and its role in Mikir Hills of Assam. The intervention of the Christian Missionaries and their educational activities in Mikir Hills during later decades of the 19th century brought the Karbis under the purview of colonial modernity. Within a short span of time, a considerable section of the Karbis adopted Christianity in the early 20th century. In fact Semson Sing Ingti, the architect of ‘Karbi Land’ also studied in Christian Missionary schools, and was the first person, raised the issue of a separate hill district for the Karbis. In this context this paper is an attempt to explore the role of colonial modernity and its politics could be seen in the post formation of Karbi Anglong district of Assam.
